About
Overview
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George's County invites professional visual artists and design teams to submit qualifications for two major exterior public art opportunities at the new Good Luck Community Center. The public artworks will serve as neighborhood anchors at the main entrance threshold, visible to vehicular traffic on Good Luck Road and pedestrians entering the site.
Two Opportunities
- Opportunity #1: Exterior Public Art Piece (Entry Plaza Sculpture), $200,000 maximum budget
- Opportunity #2: Artistic Seating Element, $50,000 maximum budget
- Artists may submit credentials for one or both opportunities; selected semi-finalists will be commissioned to execute only one project
Opportunity #1: Exterior Public Art Piece
Location: Designated area on the primary front entrance plaza, directly framed by the building's main approach sequence. Scale: Abstract forms highly preferred; must be multi-dimensional and dynamic from all viewing angles, with vertical height not exceeding 18 feet, and must safely clear all pedestrian pathways and maintain required sightlines. Materials: Propose permanent, climate-resilient materials appropriate for exterior public art, durable, low-maintenance, and suitable for long-term outdoor exposure. The architectural design features blacks, deep greens, and natural woods; community stakeholders have expressed affinity for red, black, and green colors.
Thematic Directions (Opportunity #1)
- Movement (celebrating active recreation and dance)
- Community Center Identity (e.g., creative interpretations of 'Good Luck')
- Neighborhood History and Local Heritage
- Sportsmanship, Unity, and Equity
- Sustainability in Form, Concept, or Execution
- Safe, Passive Interactivity
Opportunity #2: Artistic Seating Element
A functional, permanent public art bench seating element designed to serve patrons utilizing the exterior plaza and perimeter walkways. The seating must be designed and fabricated using durable, vandal-resistant, and climate-resilient materials suitable for permanent outdoor public use. The final design must comply with all applicable universal accessibility standards, building codes, and municipal structural requirements. The artist will collaborate directly with CGS Architects, Bradley Site Design, and MCN Build to review subterranean grading, foundation anchoring requirements, and structural site utility lines prior to installation.
Selection Process
The Artist Selection Committee will select three (3) semi-finalists for each opportunity to advance to the formal proposal phase.
