National Theater Project Creation & Touring Grant

Overview

The National Theater Project Creation & Touring Grant provides funds for creation and U.S. touring of artist-led, ensemble, devised projects. These grants are highly competitive and are awarded to ten projects annually. PLEASE NOTE: This is the final NTP Creation & Touring Grant cycle in its current form.

Award

• $110,000 total in grant funds
• $50,000 at the time of contract signing
• $30,000 interim payment
• $30,000 final payment

Eligibility

• Ensembles must have nonprofit status or a contract with a nonprofit fiscal agent by the final application deadline
• Project must be in development through at least September 1, 2025
• Project must be ready to tour by May 31, 2026
• All projects must have one committed, U.S.-based development partner relationship
• Returning artists: All NTP-supported presentations are completed and it has been one year since the last NTP-supported presentation

What Is Supported

This grant supports the creation of new work and the sharing of new work across multiple communities, groups, and audiences within the U.S. Grants support the development of the project, costs and incentives needed to establish a plan for touring, and the tour itself.

Projects Not Supported

• Projects focused solely on children's and family theater
• Projects by individual artists
• Projects developed by lead artists who are non-U.S. based
• Projects that do not meet NEFA's definition of U.S. based or NTP's definitions of devised, ensemble, tour/touring

Requirements

Applicants must be able to fulfill the Requirements & Reports for Grant Recipients if awarded. Development partners provide a variety of resources during the development of a work including residency space, virtual platforms, audience for work-in-progress showings, administrative guidance or support, marketplace advocacy, tour planning assistance, community connections, cultural support and grounding, and building connections between artists and the communities the work is with and for.

Definitions

Ensemble: A group of two or more people committed to working together over time to develop a distinct practice and body of work. Devised: Projects developed collaboratively by the ensemble, rather than from a pre-existing script or text. NEFA defines U.S. as all 50 of the United States, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the District of Columbia.
