Get matched →La Menesunda According to Marta Minujín is a reconstruction of Marta Minujín's pivotal 1965 immersive installation, originally created for the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires. This version results from research conducted in 2015 by the Museo Moderno de Buenos Aires and has been displayed in Buenos Aires, New York, and Copenhagen before coming to Spain. The installation is accompanied by a documentary survey of Minujín's happenings, performances, and participatory actions from 1963 to 1985, featuring photographs, drawings, and archive materials.
Marta Minujín (Buenos Aires, 1943) is a pioneering figure in Latin American contemporary art, recognized with Spain's Velázquez Prize in 2016. She is a key figure in happenings, installations, and participatory practices that question the boundaries between art and life, placing collective experience at the center of art-making.
La Menesunda radically transformed the artwork-spectator relationship by replacing contemplation with multi-sensorial experience, turning the exhibition space into a place of active participation. The term menesunda, from Río de la Plata slang, means a "mixture," "confusion," or "mayhem" — synthesizing the spirit of a work encompassing diverse artistic mediums and sensorial stimuli that directly involve spectators and blur the borders between art and daily life.
The exhibition amasses many concerns of 1960s avant-garde movements: entering the mind of a woman artist, the rise of mass culture, media incorporation into artistic language, the central position of the spectator, and art as a shared practice. Minujín's career has continuously explored new forms of participation and intervention in public space, from television and radio interventions to large-scale public works and collaborations with Andy Warhol.
