Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The Ian Potter Cultural Trust's Sculpture Acquisitions program originated in the 1980s to support Australian sculptors and acquire works of excellence for the National Gallery of Victoria. Six original works were commissioned during this period, including pieces by Les Kossatz, Augustine Dall, Geoffrey Bartlett, Stephen Killick, and Fiona Orr. Notable acquisitions include Geoffrey Bartlett's The Messenger, displayed in the NGV's Grimwade Gardens, and Carl Milles's Hand of God, a bronze sculpture from 1954 now located on the lawns of The Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne.

In 1999, the Trust revived this program of significant Arts Commissions. Since then, it has funded two commission series: one for music composition and one for moving image works. Each commission series offered major awards to individual artists to create specific works in a particular art form.
