Installation Technician role working closely with the Senior Curator, guest curators, exhibiting artists and Operations Manager to implement exhibitions at the gallery. Responsibilities include assisting with all aspects of exhibition construction, installation and de-installation, as well as taking the lead on audio-visual-related installation tasks.

  • Location: Art Gallery of Mississauga, 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga, ON
  • Term: Contracted/Casual Employment
  • Hours: As required per exhibition (approx. 4 times per year for two weeks at a time at 35 hours/week; and supplementary needs)
  • Compensation: $35/hour
  • Start Date: As soon as available
  • Move artwork (big/small/heavy/light) and crates and assist with art packing/unpacking
  • Install artwork in a range of media in various gallery spaces
  • Consult with artists and curatorial team on installation needs and strategies
  • Install and set up audio-visual equipment as required
  • Construct display elements and crates; may include working with woodshop equipment, solvents, hand-held and stationary power tools
  • Prepare, clean and tidy gallery spaces, organize supplies, maintain and store tools, equipment, and supplies
  • Climb ladders, operate a lift jack, paint, assist with lighting and graphics
  • Other functions as assigned
  • Minimum of two years of experience installing artworks for a museum or gallery preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in correctly handling, installing, crating, and moving contemporary art
  • Experience with installation of audio-visual equipment
  • Experience with the operation of a mechanical scissor lift
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry, construction, dry-walling, taping, painting (including rolling, brushing, cutting-in, and masking), and exhibition fabrication
  • Safe use of hand-held and stationary power tools, woodshop equipment, and electrical equipment
  • Ability to follow direction and work independently
  • Proven ability to support artists and curators in creative problem solving and planning
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to high-quality installation work
  • Ability to manage time effectively and commit to scheduled work periods, with flexibility for occasional extended hours
  • Ability to carry out physical work including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy weights, and performing extended physical tasks such as kneeling, crawling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and reaching
  • Ability to work safely on ladders up to 12 feet and mechanical lifts up to 30 feet
  • Assets: Working at Heights and scissor lift certification; experience in condition reporting; knowledge of lighting; knowledge of vinyl lettering installation; degree or diploma in Fine Arts or Visual Arts; knowledge of contemporary art practices/museum standards; access to a workshop
