A4 Residency Art Center offers a 3-month immersive environment for artistic research, experimentation, and cross-cultural exchange in Chengdu's Luxelakes Eco-City. The residency emphasizes long-term observation, local engagement, and gradual development through encounters with local communities, cultural practitioners, researchers, and fellow international participants.

  • 1 working period available: 15 March – 15 June 2027
  • 1 artist or duo per period

Visual artists may apply. Duos (2 artists, 2 curators, or a combination) are defined as those who structurally create work together and live in one space during the residency. Each person in a duo must submit a separate application.

The residency encourages projects exploring social, cultural and ecological realities of contemporary China. A4 welcomes not only artists but also researchers, designers, architects, writers, musicians and other practitioners whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries.

Each resident receives a dedicated workspace, access to shared facilities, technical advice and production support depending on project needs. Accommodation is provided within or near the residency complex. The residency team facilitates introductions to cultural institutions, community organisations, researchers and creative professionals.

The Mondriaan Fund provides a subsidy of €8,478 to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs (for 1 person). The selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution, which the Mondriaan Fund automatically deducts from the subsidy. Studio and living space rental and support from A4 are covered separately.

  • Application deadline: 27 August 2026
  • Residency period: 15 March – 15 June 2027

The residency is part of cultural exchange initiatives between Dutch and Chinese artists, supported by the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on Culture ahead of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Luxelakes Eco-City is one of China's most ambitious privately developed urban communities integrating culture, ecology, education and community life.
