About

Overview

This is a documentation of Soyoung L. Kim's 2023 ACTivate Residency, filmed by Olivia Moon. The residency showcases her interdisciplinary practice combining performance art, projection, sound, and painting.

Residency Focus

Kim's project deepens themes from her earlier work "GHOST ROOTS: A New Ganggangsullae," which reinterprets traditional Korean dance in a contemporary U.S. context. The residency uses the Cyclorama's circular space to stage immersive installations and performances.

Project Elements

Memory landscapes created from archival material and layered artwork, projected onto the Cyclorama walls in rotating motion
Soundscapes composed from travel recordings and in-situ recordings at the venue
A live performance element designed to draw audiences into the circular space
Painting created within the Cyclorama as part of the overall installation
