Overview
The Thurgood Marshall College Exchange Program allows UC San Diego undergraduate students to study and live at Morehouse College, Spelman College, or Xavier University of Louisiana for a semester or academic year.
Exchange Institutions
- Spelman College: historically black college for women established in 1881, located in Atlanta
- Morehouse College: four-year liberal arts college for men established in 1867, located in Atlanta, Georgia
- Xavier University of Louisiana: four-year university established in 1925, located in New Orleans, LA
Eligibility
- UC San Diego undergraduate students only
- Completed 90 quarter units (or 60 semester units) by the exchange quarter
- 3.0 or higher grade point average
- Appropriate academic preparation in major field of study or field of interest
Application Requirements
- Completed application form
- One-page statement of purpose outlining reasons for participating in the exchange
- Two letters of recommendation (one from faculty) addressing appropriateness for the exchange program
- Updated resume detailing relevant work, internship, academic, or engagement experiences
Program Duration & Timing
- Spelman/Morehouse: semester or academic year
- Xavier University of Louisiana: Winter and Spring Quarters only (Spring Semester)
Tuition & Housing
UC San Diego students pay tuition and fees to the home campus. All students must reside at the host campus. Housing fees vary by institution: Spelman College housing paid to UC San Diego; Morehouse College housing paid to Morehouse unless there is equal student exchange; Xavier University housing paid to Xavier.
Important Notes
- The HBCU Exchange Program is currently paused for the 2025–26 academic year
- All applications must be approved by both UC San Diego and the host institution
- Applicants are responsible for all travel and personal expenses during the exchange quarter
