During STAR Residencies, The Observatory will deepen their entanglement with subterranean phenomena and geological formations. The residency focuses on volcanoes and their complexity, non-linear nature, and cultural significance in diverse belief systems. Artists will collaborate with the Volcano Group and other EOS researchers to develop understanding of these unpredictable and explosive entities, with focus on the volcanic arcs that shape Southeast Asia.

The Observatory's sound-centred approach will explore sonic emanations of volcanic phenomena. The residency also plans to examine magma transport dynamics, viscous flow, rock formation/deformation, crystallisation, degassing, and solidification, reinterpreting data and knowledge produced by EOS researchers.

The Observatory is a band comprising multi-instrumentalists Cheryl Ong, Dharma and Yuen Chee Wai. Their practice spans music and performance, improvisation, intermedia, experimentation and noise-adjacent territories. Over two decades, the band's polymath practice encompasses music and performance, in-person festivals and online radio shows, touring gigs and interdisciplinary exhibitions.
