Overview

SOIL is a not-for-profit cooperative space established, supported and operated by local artists. Founded in 1995, SOIL exists as an alternative venue for artists to exhibit, develop, and advance their work, committed to exhibiting and celebrating art of diverse artists' backgrounds, media and content. This is SOIL's first open call for new members in over two years.

Who Can Apply

Open to artists. BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Currently enrolled students cannot apply.

Membership Responsibilities

Gallery sitting once per month
Meetings every other Monday (in-person & online) from 7–9 PM
Job to help run the gallery
Shepherding exhibitions
Donate to quasi-annual auction
$35/month dues (waived for BIPOC members)

Membership Perks

Participate in an artist-run co-op style gallery supporting and uplifting other artists and creatives
Solo exhibition in the Backspace Gallery once every 2 years
Occasionally participate in traveling exhibitions with the SOIL membership
Build/support the larger arts community

Special Note

SOIL is seeking new members with experience in (or openness to learning about) finances and/or grant writing to help fill vacancies on those teams. In the spirit of removing barriers, membership dues are waived for incoming BIPOC members.
