Get matched →City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi is offering a new opportunity for a New Zealand-born or based artist to create a major outdoor sculpture in the capital, called the City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi Sculpture Terrace Commission. The sculpture will be a contemporary landmark, visible from Harris Street and inside the gallery, standing on an unusual site always intended for contemporary artwork.
They are looking for practising New Zealand artists to submit proposals for innovative, dynamic, and well-considered public sculptures. The sculpture will be a defining feature of the building and a placemaker.
The new sculpture location on Harris Street is a major thoroughfare and connector into Te Ngākau Civic Square. The sculpture must withstand Wellington's weather conditions, including wind, salt, rain, and sunshine.
Applications are open from either New Zealand-born artists practising overseas, or artists based in New Zealand.
Proposals will be shortlisted and selected by a panel composed of City Gallery Wellington staff and external advisors. Three shortlisted artists will receive funding to develop their concept before the final selection is made.
The artist commission is supported by the Wellington City Council Public Art Fund and the Stout Trust.
