Backcountry Camping and Permits - Redwood National and State Parks (U.S. National Park Service)

Overview

Redwood National and State Parks offer seven designated backcountry campsites along 200 miles of trails for those seeking a rugged, off-the-grid camping experience. These remote sites do not have drive-up access and require hiking, biking, horseback riding, or rafting to reach them.

Getting a Permit

• Request online up to 160 days in advance
• Must be requested no later than 24 hours before your trip

Campsite Types

• Redwood Forests – Sleep among towering ancient trees
• Coastal Sites – Camp near the ocean with the sound of waves at night
• Prairies & Oak Woodlands – Open landscapes with great wildlife viewing

• Download maps and site descriptions from the park
• Purchase topographic maps from Redwood Parks Conservancy
• Check current conditions for weather updates and trail closures

Important Considerations

You will be in bear and mountain lion country with no cell service and limited access to help. All backcountry users should adhere to Redwood National & State Park regulations and Leave No Trace guidelines.
