Get matched →The Grantham Foundation, on the recommendation of its expert committee, awards a grant of 5,000 to 10,000 CAD (depending on the project's scope) along with a three-week residency to an architect or architecture researcher whose practice is sensitive to current environmental issues.
The Grantham Foundation for Art and the Environment's architecture residency program aims to explore how architecture, when deeply rooted in society and territory, and based on understanding and respect for biological and cultural diversity, can become a vector of change for humans and more-than-humans to better inhabit Earth. It seeks to support forward-looking reflection to promote architecture that is sensitive to places and all living things within them.
The residency involves a three-week research stay at the Foundation, followed by a public sharing of ongoing work. This stay offers architects time for reflection and work on the Foundation's premises. Meetings with the Foundation's artistic director will take place to provide support. For this initial phase, the laureate will receive a 5,000 CAD grant. In some cases, collaboration may continue for subsequent months to further develop the project (phase 2), with an additional support of up to 5,000 CAD available. Any production resulting from work undertaken at the Foundation must mention the Foundation's support. A flat-rate allowance of up to 1,000 CAD is provided to cover a portion of travel expenses for laureates residing beyond a 500 km radius around Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham.
The program is open to architects and researchers from Quebec, Canada, and abroad whose research and/or creative work in architecture addresses contemporary environmental challenges. Duos are eligible under the same conditions. International candidates are responsible for administrative procedures to enter Canada and stay in Quebec during their visit.
The residency duration at the Foundation is three continuous weeks. Exact dates are determined with future residents.
The Foundation's pavilion is located on the bank of a small river, in a wooded area at the edge of a forest, in the francophone municipality of Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham, about 100 km east of Montreal. It serves as a living, working, and exhibition space, designed to foster year-round dialogue between indoor and outdoor environments. The interior space is open, equipped with a retractable bed and kitchen. Residents have access to the woods, river, and adjacent forest. On-site work is permitted and encouraged, but must respect the integrity of the premises. No permanent objects may be installed indoors or outdoors.

Independent experts from architectural and academic fields serve on the selection committee. The laureate will be chosen through a two-step selection process: a pre-selection of two or three candidacies, followed by a video conference interview. All candidates will receive a response by September 12, 2026, at the latest.
