Art Jameel has committed to reducing its emissions and waste footprints and adopting a climate positive approach in its operations, putting the climate emergency at the heart of its global operations.
What has been done
Art Jameel conducted Green House Gas Audits for the Jameel Arts Centre (2020 and 2021) to understand baseline emissions. The organization has implemented operational changes including LED lighting with motion sensors, water-saving practices, waste segregation and recycling programs, renewable energy considerations, and prioritization of local production and sea-freight over air-freight.
Programming and engagement
Art Jameel engages audiences through exhibitions (An Ocean in Every Drop, Staple: What's on your plate, Crude), artist's garden commissions, public programmes (Material Matters symposium, Shifting Earth biennial symposium, Edible Responses, Digital earth), and community engagement initiatives including Down to Earth annual festival, Jaddaf Community Garden, and My winter garden course.
Architecture and gardens
Jameel Arts Centre features seven gardens designed by landscape architect Anouk Vogel, planted only with native desert species to reduce water and maintenance needs.
Emissions reductions
Scope 2 emissions reduced through water-saving practices, water filtration systems, LED lighting, efficient climate control schedules, increased remote working, and improved UV filters. Scope 3 emissions reduced by prioritizing local production and sea-freight, lengthening exhibition duration from 4 to 6 months, re-using exhibition builds, and recycling waste.
Ongoing work 2023-2025
Art Jameel is working with museum and gallery colleagues to implement sustainable collection care practices and revise climate control guidelines. The organization commits to purchasing renewable energy where possible and installing solar panels or other renewable energy generators at the Jameel Arts Centre.
