The Joan Mitchell Catalogue Raisonné project seeks an experienced Researcher to conduct archival and object-based research on paintings by Joan Mitchell (1925–1992). The Researcher will collect, verify and update information on Joan Mitchell paintings in public collections worldwide, conduct painting examinations, coordinate photography, manage color corrections, and process archival materials. As the project advances, focus will shift to authoring catalogue entries and researching works in private collections.

  • Cultivate relationships with museums and institutions to access paintings, archives and secondary source materials related to Joan Mitchell
  • Schedule and conduct examinations of Joan Mitchell paintings in public collections worldwide
  • Coordinate with photographers, museum staff, and art handlers to arrange new photography (recto/verso) of paintings
  • Review, annotate and manage photographic proofs to ensure color and material accuracy
  • Enter data from primary and secondary sources into the JMCR database (FileMaker)
  • Respond to inquiries from auction houses, galleries, art advisers, and collectors
  • Maintain meticulous paper and digital files and track expenses
  • Provide the Project Manager with timelines, updates and proposals on research and publishing milestones

  • Location: New York, NY (Hybrid, 3 days/week in office)
  • Requires domestic and international travel
  • Reports to: Project Manager, Mitchell Catalogue Raisonné
  • Effective Date: August 17, 2026
  • Salary: $80,000 - $90,000

  • Knowledge of 20th-century art history, painting materials and techniques, and standard art-handling protocols
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Experience with FileMaker or similar database systems preferred
