Established over 25 years ago, the residency programme is now also open to international artists from all backgrounds. The residency hosts up to nine artists at a time, with stays typically ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. Villa Karo offers much more than a workspace—it is a collaborative and context-responsive environment where exchange is central. Residents become part of a small, multidisciplinary community, supported by on-site staff and peer dialogue. Optional “showing & sharing” sessions provide opportunities to present work-in-progress and engage with others. At the same time, the residency prioritises a calm and respectful atmosphere, ensuring space for focused, independent work. Villa Karo organises also excursions to cultural sites around the country and provides a 24/7 staff presence. Located in the tranquil fishing village Grand-Popo, Benin, Villa Karo also operates a vibrant cultural centre with free public programming throughout the year. Activities include concerts, theatre and dance performances, film screenings, literary cafés, a public library, and 6–8 exhibitions annually in its contemporary art museum.
