MFA/MA/PGDip in Art & Ecology

Overview

The MFA/MA in Art & Ecology is an interdisciplinary, research-based postgraduate programme designed for students who wish to develop an ecologically focused artistic practice. Graduate students develop key skills in producing work in studio and field-based contexts, investigate how social and earth ecologies coexist within the unique context of the Burren, and have the opportunity to participate in collaborative or community-based initiatives.

Programme Options

• MFA: 2-year programme comprising 120 ECTS
• MA: 1-year programme (Sept–August) comprising 90 ECTS
• PG Dip: 1-year, 2-semester programme comprising 60 ECTS

• Studio Research with field-based investigation and experimentation
• Theory and Art & Ecology engaging with historical and contemporary discourse
• Introduction to Ecosystem Science with first-hand experience of the Burren
• Ecology and Sustainability in the Burren module exploring stewardship and global ecological concerns
• Professional Studies modules covering artist professionalism, exhibition curation, and marketing
• Work with environmental scientists, local conservationists, geologists, and archaeologists

Partnerships

The MFA/MA in Art & Ecology has established working partnerships with Burren Beo (hosting lectures and fieldtrips on Place Based Learning and Farming for Nature; annual Learning Landscapes symposium) and Burren GeoPark (presenting lectures and fieldtrips on Burren geology and landscape stewardship).

Accreditation & Recognition

The MFA/MA/PGDip is accredited by University of Galway and recognized as a Level 9 Master degree, Level 7 Major, by the Irish Register of Qualifications (QQI). Transcripts and diplomas are issued by University of Galway.

Progression Pathways

• On completion of the MFA or MA, students are eligible to apply to progress to the PhD in Studio Art with supervisor/faculty approval
• Completion of the PGDip may allow students to progress to complete the MFA or MA

Preparation for Professional Practice

Professional Practices modules prepare students for curating and installing exhibitions, either collaboratively or as solo artists. Students learn portfolio development, promotional and marketing tools, and budget creation to exhibit as professional artists.
