The Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia exhibits visual arts created by artists living or working in the region (DC, Maryland, and Virginia). The gallery invites artists and curators to submit proposals for solo shows, group shows, or curator-proposed exhibitions.

  • Artists living or working in Virginia, Maryland, or DC may submit a solo show proposal
  • Groups of artists in the region may submit a group show proposal
  • Curators living anywhere may submit a proposal for a show featuring artists from the region
  • Painting, drawing, collage, etc. must be framed or fully finished, wired, and ready to hang
  • Sculpture must be less than 9 inches deep and lighter than 30 pounds
  • No floor-mounted or free-standing work
  • No work requiring electricity
  • Submit 6–12 images
  • Maximum 3 entries

Proposals will be evaluated by Athenaeum Gallery Director Twig Murray on: what the artist is trying to achieve or communicate; uniqueness or interest; technical excellence; and recent display history in the area.

The Athenaeum Gallery retains a 40% commission on sold works and issues a check for 60% of the sales price within 30 days of the show closing. Work does not have to be for sale. For curator-proposed shows, commission structure can be adjusted by agreement.

All works are insured by the gallery for 100% of retail price during the show. Artists are responsible for delivery and pickup of unsold work at the show's close.
