Overview
The IMS Photography Research Fellowship, now in its fourth edition, offers two fellowships to support original research projects on the photographic archive of Albert Frisch (1840-1918), a German photographer who made the first known photographic records of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and its inhabitants. For the first time, two fellowships are available instead of one, expanding representation of historically silenced voices and identities.
Axes & Themes
- Axis 1: Amazônia de dentro (Amazon from within) - Indigenous reading of Frisch's album "Résultat d'une Expédition Photographique sur le Solimões ou Alto Amazonas et Rio Negro." Exclusively for self-declared indigenous researchers, preferably from Upper Amazon peoples.
- Axis 2: A Amazônia por Frisch e seus contextos nas coleções do IMS (The Amazon through Frisch and its contexts in IMS collections). Open to researchers in general; self-declared indigenous researchers are also encouraged to apply to this axis.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants are Brazilian or foreign residents who have lived in Brazil for at least one year and hold either a Master's degree or higher, OR a Bachelor's degree with at least three years of documented experience conducting and publishing research projects in Humanities or Social Sciences in print or digital media.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit one original, unpublished research project—that is, a project not previously presented publicly and not resulting from a dissertation, thesis, or undergraduate/graduate course conclusion work.

One fellowship is reserved for self-declared indigenous researchers, preferably from Upper Amazon peoples, to provide indigenous perspectives on Frisch's archival collection.
