About
Overview
This is not an open call for applications. Rather, it is a report on a completed public art commission. Artist Paul de Kort was commissioned to create De Hoofdburcht, a public artwork installed in the newly redesigned Stinspark in Zwolle's Westenholte neighborhood. The artwork symbolizes Castle Voorst, which stood on this site 600 years ago and was destroyed in 1362 during conflicts between the cities of Zwolle, Kampen, and Deventer.
The Artwork
De Hoofdburcht consists of rings of composite poles that form the silhouette of the former castle. The poles create a labyrinth, making the artwork both visually striking and interactive—visitors can play and explore within it. Installed on a terp (artificial dwelling mound), the artwork literally and figuratively becomes the highlight of Stinspark.
Project Goals
The redesigned Stinspark aims to make the archaeological monument experiential and increase the park's usability and quality. The project was developed in collaboration with the Province of Overijssel, the Dutch Heritage Agency (Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed), and the Municipality of Zwolle.
Timeline
The official opening of Stinspark is scheduled for early 2024. Paul de Kort began installation of the artwork in October 2023.
