About
Overview
Shiro Oni Studio Artist in Residence Program offers 6-week residencies for groups of 9 artists in the small mountain town of Onishi, Gunma Prefecture. Away from urban congestion, artists work free from distractions while building relationships with other residents and the local community. A group exhibition takes place the final weekend of the residency.

Eligibility
Open to artists based anywhere in the world at any stage of career. Teams may apply together. Pets are not allowed.
Disciplines & media
- Spring and Fall groups: artists working solely with clay (centered on anagama kiln firing)
- Early Summer and Later Summer groups: artists of all disciplines welcome, including clay
- Disciplines listed include painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, ceramics, digital media, film, photography, performance art, woodworking, textile arts, and more
Facilities & accommodations
- Housing: Private bedroom in shared facility on campus
- Meals: Some meals provided (at least 2 per day); shared kitchen access
- Studios: Private studio space (24/7 access), shared studios, woodshop, ceramic facilities with clays and glazes, electric wheels, gas kiln, printers, easels, dedicated wood shop with various tools
- Equipment: Tablesaw, bandsaw, router table, jointer, planer, wood vises, woodworking tables
- Other: Bicycles provided, exhibition and flyer printing, translation support

- Residency fee: ¥450,000 (covers 6 weeks)
- Shiro Oni Studio covers: Private bedroom, building utilities, 24/7 studio access, woodshop and ceramic facilities, translation support, bicycles, exhibition and flyer printing
- Artists cover: Travel expenses, food costs, and certain workshop fees; own artwork materials (though free materials storage available with leftover supplies from previous artists, including paper, fabric, ink, tape, paint, and access to bamboo and lumber mill off-cuts)
Application & selection
Fill out the online application form. First round of interviews begins September 2026. Acceptance letters sent by December 2026. Up to 36 artists accepted in most recent year.
Additional info
Nearly 300 artists have participated in the Shiro Oni Studio residency. Full-time artists, graduate students, and university professors attend to focus on work in an intimate environment and build relationships with other artists and local residents.
