Program Overview

The Black Arts Projects Program supports arts projects by Black artists, Black artist collectives, and Black-led, Black-focused, and Black-serving non-profit organizations. The program is multidisciplinary and recognizes diverse art practices, including new and emerging art forms, culturally relevant art practices, and multi/interdisciplinary projects. TAC designed this program to increase access to and awareness of Toronto Arts Council funding by Black artists while amplifying their work and creating avenues for sustainable art practice.

Eligibility

Identify as a Black professional artist or be part of a Black artist collective
Be an incorporated not-for-profit arts organization that is Black-led, Black-focused, and Black-serving with a majority of Black members on Board of Directors and Executive
Payment of artists' fees is required in all categories
Cannot apply as both an individual and an organization/collective for the same project simultaneously

Two Grant Categories

Creation & Development: Supports full creation, partial creation, or completion of work-in-progress in any arts discipline at any stage. Activities may include artistic creation or research and development. Open to individual artists and artist collectives.
Presentation: Supports exhibition, presentation, and dissemination of work by Black artists in any arts discipline. Open to individual artists, artist collectives, and arts organizations. Does not fund creation of new works for presentation.

Grant Amounts

Creation & Development: Maximum $10,000; up to $15,000 with mentorship component
Presentation: Maximum $15,000; up to $20,000 with mentorship component
TAC may fund up to 100% of requested amount

Eligible Expenses

Both categories support: artistic, production, and administrative fees and costs including venue, publicity, marketing, and outreach; fees paid to collaborators, mentors, and creative resources; studio costs, materials, and production elements; rental of space or software; and visiting sites of significance. Presentation category also includes installation and rehearsal costs.

Project Timeline

Project start date must be a minimum of 4 months after submission. All projects must be completed within two years of the notification letter date.

Additional Support

Mentorship option available in each category with up to $5,000 additional budget for mentor/mentee compensation. Arts Career Development workshops and Black Futures Studios Co-Creation Lab available to grant recipients. All additional resources are optional.
