Award
The Joseph Plaskett Award is a $65,000 postgraduate award in painting for exceptional emerging Canadian artists admitted in a graduate program. The award was created by Canadian artist Joseph Plaskett in 2004 to give young Canadian painters the opportunity to discover Europe.
About the Winner
Painter Claire Drummond from Elgin, Quebec, is the 2025 recipient. She completed her Master of Fine Arts in 2023 at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University. Her practice focuses on self-portraits and portraits of artists/m(others) that challenge beliefs about maternity and domesticity in art, using deliberately hasty brushwork and repeated figures to reflect fragmented art-making conditions.
How the Award is Used
Drummond will spend time in Edinburgh, Scotland to grow her artistic practice and reconnect with Scottish heritage, with potential support of a residency at the Spilt Milk Gallery. She will visit London, Paris, Florence and the Vatican to deepen her understanding of maternal visual history, focusing on idealized icons spanning the 3rd to 19th centuries.
Exhibition & Next Steps
Drummond's work will be showcased at the Joe Plaskett Foundation Booth (#A07) during Art Toronto (October 23–26, 2025). A solo exhibition will follow in fall 2027 at the Eltuek Arts Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia, featuring a new body of work entitled The Artist as M(other).
Selection Process
The award recipient was chosen by a pan-Canadian jury who met virtually in June 2025 to assess 56 applications. Jury members included Ufuk Ali Gueray (visual artist and professor at NSCAD University, Halifax, Nova Scotia), Guillaume Lépine (visual artist and professor at Université de Moncton, Moncton, New Brunswick), and Lisa Milroy (artist and professor emerita at Slade School of Fine Art, University College London).
Next Call for Applications
As the Joseph Plaskett Award is granted on a biennial basis, the next call for applications is set to open in February 2027.
