Pôle artistique et muséal Ambulo, Digne-les-Bains, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Research residencies allow artists to spend time deepening knowledge on subjects touching their work or experimenting with new forms of creation without the constraint of producing an exhibition. Residencies proposed by Pôle artistique et muséal Digne-les-Bains take place over one year, which may be arranged as a single stay or split across multiple periods. Total residency duration is a minimum of 6 weeks. The residency concludes with a public presentation in a form freely chosen by the artist and organized with the Pôle and its partners.

Artists receive an honorarium of 5,000 EUR and are reimbursed for transportation and meal expenses. This amount is paid in two installments: at the end of the first 15 days of residency and after the public presentation.

Artists are housed at the Cairn residence, a 65 m² semi-troglodyte building designed by architect Bruno Chiambretto, located within the landscaped setting of Parc Saint-Benoît in Digne. The residence includes two bedrooms (one with a double bed), a living area, kitchen, and small terrace. It overlooks the Bléone valley and is immediately adjacent to the Cairn exhibition room, Musée Promenade, and a petrifying spring.

Digne-les-Bains is geographically isolated but well-preserved. Artists with vehicles have advantages for exploring the territory. For those without a car, the Cairn provides electric bicycles for daily trips and distances up to several dozen kilometers, plus occasional vehicle accompaniment by Pôle staff for specific missions. Regular buses serve Marseille (Gare Saint-Charles, line 68) and Aix TGV station (line 66); the 'train des pignes' from Nice offers regular connections with the Alpes Maritimes.

Pôle artistique et muséal Digne-les-Bains - Ambulo is a nationally significant contemporary art center comprising four sites: the Cairn (contemporary art hub founded 2000), Musée Gassendi, Maison Alexandra David-Neel, and the Crypte archéologique de la cathédrale Notre-Dame du Bourg, plus the outdoor Collection L'Art en montagne spanning 220,000 hectares across 47 communes. The Cairn pursues a cultural program nourished by repeated residencies and offers two exhibitions annually plus numerous off-site events. In partnership with diverse regional actors (sports, sciences, agriculture, tourism, archaeology), the Pôle opens research windows for artists within a constantly reinventing rural landscape. The Musée Gassendi holds collections of archaeology, geology, natural sciences, fine arts, and works by artists who have resided at the Cairn. The Maison Alexandra David-Neel houses Asian arts and since December 2024 hosts Guimet+Digne, the official branch of the Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet.

All application materials must be submitted by September 15 at 12:00 noon.
