Overview
The American Academy in Rome offers an 8-week residency for visual artists, curators, and art observers to live and work in Rome. The program aims to renew connections between the arts and humanities, and between contemporary art and tradition. Residents become Affiliated Artists, receive a studio with living space, and participate in the Academy community. The residency concludes with a presentation or open studio.

Who may apply
Visual artists, curators, and art observers. Individual applicants only—duos may not apply. Applicants based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom may receive increased contribution to cover higher travel costs.
Funding
- Artists: €5,746 subsidy
- Curators or art observers: €4,142 subsidy
- All residents must contribute 10% personal contribution (automatically deducted from subsidy)
- Funding covers travel expenses, material costs, and living costs
Application requirements
A clear motivation statement is required explaining why you want to participate, what research you plan to conduct, and how it will contribute to the program. No concrete project proposal is needed. Review the Residency page for full terms, conditions, and assessment criteria before applying.
During the residency
Residents have a studio and living space at the Academy, located on the Janiculum. Lunch and dinner are provided Monday through Friday, fostering exchange between artists and scholars. The Royal Dutch Institute Rome (KNIR) facilities are available for use. Selection is made by an advisory committee; 1 resident is selected per round.
