Overview

A one-hour express workshop for professional artists and emerging professionals who want to learn how to prepare a budget for a grant application. The workshop focuses on presenting revenues, expenses, and financial needs clearly. Led by Charlie Julien, a public funding consultant, participants will learn how to make their budgets more coherent with jury expectations.

Workshop objectives

• Identify the main categories of revenues and expenses
• Understand the importance of budget in a grant application
• Present clearly the financial needs of an artistic project
• Build a budget coherent with planned activities
• Identify simple adjustments that can make a budget more readable for juries

Prerequisites

No prior experience in preparing grant budgets is required. Participants do not need to have a budget already written. Participants may have in mind a project, an upcoming application, or general questions about budget presentation to connect with their own process.

Pedagogical approach

The workshop will be based on a structured presentation, concrete examples, and reference documentation. Short discussions and question periods will allow participants to connect content to their own needs.

About the instructor

Charlie Julien holds a DESS in cultural organization management from HEC Montreal and a BAC in drama with a focus on theatre studies from UQAM. He has worked in the arts and culture sector for over 10 years, including with Les Filles électriques and Festival Phénomena, the Quebec Theatre Council, the Quebec Association of Puppeteers, and various cultural festivals. As an independent cultural manager since 2021, he works in public and private funding, administration, and development with approximately forty artists, creation companies, presenters, and service organizations in the performing arts sector. He has written or revised over 100 grant applications and has served on the evaluation committee for Non-Disciplinary Artistic Practices of the Montreal Arts Council since 2023. He has particular interest in interdisciplinary arts, alternative practices, emerging artists, and issues related to accessibility and underrepresented communities in the arts.
