Get matched →Saggar firing (from the English word meaning 'protection' or 'box') is a ceramic firing technique in which pieces are enclosed in a refractory container to isolate them from the kiln atmosphere. Historically used in ancient China and later in European manufactories from the 18th century onward, Saggar firing today is used as an artistic technique: the protective container becomes a space for controlled chemical creation, where smoke, reduction, and coloration effects are intentionally provoked. Firing becomes aesthetic.
A 3-day training session (21 hours) led by artist Eugénie Faurie at Hyperterrier, Nantes. The program is limited to four professionals working in the visual arts or crafts who wish to learn Saggar firing principles and master firing pieces in a gas kiln.

Participants will understand the principles of Saggar firing and the chemical reactions related to smoking; learn to handle reactive materials (oxides, fuels) with caution; and master firing in a gas Raku kiln.
Bring 2-3 pieces in grogged stoneware (PRAF), polished and bisque-fired (less than 40 cm in diameter) to serve as a basis for analysis and experimentation. Wear clothing appropriate for outdoor work and proximity to fire. Masks and gloves will be provided. If you have a disability, contact the organizer to discuss necessary accommodations.
