About
Overview
This residency celebrates 50 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia through cultural exchange. In March 2014, Temenggong organized a seal-carving residency bringing together three Malaysian seal carvers (Chong Choy, Tai Boon Piow, and Tan Shin Tiong) and three Singaporean seal carvers (Oh Chai Hoo, Soo Suan Cheok, and Tang Yip Seng) to collaborate and create more than 100 pieces of seals.
Materials & Mediums
Artists created seals from stone, wood, and porcelain, engaging with both traditional calligraphic and sculptural approaches to seal carving.
Exhibition & Workshops
All works created during the residency were displayed in the exhibition "New Impressions: A Post-residency Exhibition on the Art of Seal Carving." Beyond the exhibition, two workshops on seal carving were offered to give more Singaporeans an opportunity to experience the art form.
