Overview
The Kulturstiftung der Länder supports the acquisition of works of art and cultural artifacts of particular importance to Germany on a pro rata basis. The funding covers important works from all periods of painting, drawing, graphic art, sculpture, photography, applied arts, music, and literature, as well as objects from natural and technological history.
Who Can Apply
Non-profit organisations, associations (GmbH, UG), and public institutions that are publicly accessible and non-commercial.
What Is Eligible
Acquisitions must be for publicly accessible, non-profit institutions or publicly accessible corporations under public law. The acquiring institution must demonstrate that the object fits meaningfully into its mission statement, collection profile, and collection strategy; can be adequately conserved; will be integrated into the permanent exhibition; is documented digitally or made publicly accessible online; is available to experts for research; and will be the subject of the institution's own research projects.

Key Dates
- Submission deadline (for funding over €100,000): December 15, 2026
- All other applications can be submitted at any time
- Funding that is not drawn down 12 months after the funding commitment expires
- Applications for extension must be submitted at least 8 weeks before the deadline
Application Process
A mandatory consultation with the Kulturstiftung der Länder must be held before submitting an application. After the meeting, applicants receive access to FOKUS, the digital funding portal. The application process has two stages: a preliminary application outlining the project, followed by a comprehensive formal application if approved.
Decision-Making
Applications with pro rata funding up to €100,000 are approved by the Executive Board. Applications over €100,000 are submitted to the foundation's committees, which meet twice yearly in spring and fall. After a positive decision, applicants receive a grant agreement with information on public presentation and possible publication.
