Overview

The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) recognizes that artists face diverse legal issues crucial to career sustainability and protection of creative works. In 2026, the GCAC offers a legal grant to help with eligible legal expenses related to artistic practice and art business. The GCAC has also established a Lawyer Referral Service with attorneys who provide eligible legal services at a fixed rate of $300 per service.

Eligibility

• Age 18 or older
• Portfolio, body of work, or performance history; receives payment for performances or sales; regularly dedicates time to creating and sharing art through shows, festivals, publications, exhibitions, etc.
• May have formal or informal training and actively participates with the arts community
• Focused on expressing own creative ideas and aesthetics, not documentation or journalism
• Franklin County resident for at least 1 year before application
• Must remain a resident of central Ohio for 1 year after grant date
• Not enrolled as a university student pursuing a degree

Who Cannot Apply

• Influencers or YouTube/TikTok/Instagram content creators
• Culinary artists/chefs
• Models and stylists
• Body artists (makeup, nails, hair, tattoos, etc.)
• Music producers, engineers, sound/recording/podcast engineers
• Strictly commercial photographers/videographers (weddings, portraits, business photos)
• Club or mobile DJs hired for public or private events
• Religious or cult leaders creating work only for a congregation
• Artists creating work using solely artificial intelligence (AI)

Eligible Legal Expenses

• Business entity creation (e.g., LLC formation)
• Contract review
• Lease agreement review
• Rebranding and general guidance
• Specific services include: explaining Ohio business entity options, evaluating artist needs for proper entity type, determining business name and registering with Ohio Secretary of State, drafting and filing articles of incorporation, requesting EIN from IRS, and providing checklist for opening business bank account

Funding Note

The GCAC's annual grant budget depends on lodging and admission tax revenue from the City of Columbus and Franklin County funding. Due to economic changes, the GCAC is adopting a conservative approach to funding and operations in 2026. Grant amounts for the next cycle will be lower than previous years. If revenues exceed projections, the GCAC will notify grantees about additional support that may be allocated later in the year.
