AMAZÔNIA: AMAZON SESSION is a multidisciplinary artist immersive residency program in the heart of the Amazon rainforest designed to gather creatives of all disciplines. The program fosters exploration, experimentation, connection and deep research by engaging with the rainforest's unique biodiversity, inhabitants, rhythms and forms. Through 'artistic foraging' and deep immersion, participants reconnect with the territory and their inner selves, developing ideas grounded in the soil of Alter do Chão while engaging meaningfully with the local community.

The Amazon Edition offers a sanctuary for deep, site-responsive immersion where creative practice and field research converge within the living pulse of the jungle. Built upon freedom of inquiry rather than production pressure, the program provides stillness for residents to cultivate unique investigative paths through slow and intentional absorption of the environment. Practice remains self-directed and unscheduled, though two curators/guides will be on-site to organize various practices and activities for artists to join at their own discretion.

We invite artists and practitioners from all disciplines to apply. We welcome a diverse global community of thinkers and makers, including—but not limited to—visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, curators, writers, poets, musicians, sound artists, performers, botanists, scientists, activists, and researchers. The program is designed for professionals at every stage of their journey, from emerging voices to established practitioners. We actively encourage applications from those with non-traditional backgrounds who wish to bridge their knowledge with the forest.

The residency takes place August 17 to August 31, 2027, for a duration of 2 weeks.

Facilities place residents in direct contact with the diversity of the Amazon Rainforest. Accommodations are shared and connected with natural surroundings, designed to breathe with the jungle and foster communal living deeply connected to the local rhythms of Alter do Chão. Private rooms may be available upon request, depending on availability. Participants have access to a shared kitchen, fridge, freezer, outdoor dining area, and basic cooking equipment for self-catering.

The program encourages stepping beyond conventional studio walls. In the Amazon, the territory becomes your primary workshop, and the elements—water, mud, light, and humidity—become your collaborators. Whether navigating an Igarapé in a canoe or finding stillness under the canopy of primary forest, participants develop open-air practices dictated by the rhythm of tides, shifting tropical light, and the profound silence of the trees.

This residency operates through a participation fee. The full value is 2980 USD for 2 weeks. A 50% deposit is required within 10 days after receiving your successful application letter. The remaining 50% must be fulfilled 60 days prior to arrival in Alter do Chão. External funding is welcome; the program is prepared to synchronize administrative deadlines with funding cycles.
