Skip to main content Metro Council Menu Art in City Hall 2026 - 2027CALL FOR ARTISTS INTRODUCTIONThe Louisville Metro Government, Metro Council, and Louisville Visual Art (LVA) invite artists to submit works of art for consideration for display in the eighth annual Art in City Hall exhibition. Selected artworks will be exhibited in the entrance lobby, hallways and public spaces within City Hall. Primary audiences will include the Metro Council representatives, staff, visiting constituents, and members of the public attending Metro Council and committee meetings.Artists may submit original two-dimensional artwork in any media. BACKGROUNDCity Hall is located at 601 W Jefferson Street in downtown Louisville. The Italianate stone structure was designed by John Andrewartha and C.S. Mergell and built in 1870-73. City Hall’s architectural details on the exterior of the building reference Louisville’s economic strengths at the time it was built, including a series of animal heads above the second-story windows and the pediment relief depicting a locomotive. Today, City Hall houses the offices and chambers of the Metro Council.The Metro Council is the legislative branch of Louisville Metro Government and is comprised of 26 council members corresponding to the 26 districts throughout Jefferson County. ARTIST ELIGIBILITYThis opportunity is open to all artists of any race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality or disability working in Louisville/Jefferson County. Artist should submit original, two-dimensional artwork meeting the specifications outlined below. There is no entry fee. Each artist selected to exhibit their work will receive a $500 honorarium. The Art in City Hall exhibition will take place over February 2026 through January 2027. ESTIMATED TIMELINEDecember 1, 2025 Call for artist submissions announcedJanuary 12, 2026 Application deadlineJanuary 13– 16, 2026 Selection Committee meetingFebruary 2-4, 2026: Delivery of work by artists selected and beginning of installation.February 12, 2025 Exhibition opening and receptionJanuary 2027 Exhibition closes and artists pick-up artwork SPECIFICATIONS All artwork must be original and two-dimensional.Outside dimensions of artwork (including frames) must not be smaller than 24 x 24 in. and must not exceed 60 x 60 in.All artwork must be framed, stretched or mounted to durable material, and ready for hanging with D-ring hangers, wire, or equivalent.Artists are responsible for transportation and delivery of selected artworks to City Hall by designated date and for pick up by a designated date at the conclusion of the exhibition.Artworks submitted for consideration must be available throughout the duration of the exhibition, February 2026 through January 2027. SELECTION PROCESSArtwork will be selected by a committee consisting of Metro Council and staff and Louisville Visual Art representatives.Up to five artists will be selected for the exhibition.Each selected artist will be asked to exhibit one or more of the submitted artworks.Upon selection of artwork, LVA and Louisville Metro Government will provide participating artists with a loan agreement covering the terms of the loan. Participating artists will complete and sign the loan agreement, and return a copy to the City.Each selected artist will receive a $500 honorarium. In order to receive payment, artists must be registered with the City and in good standing with the Revenue Commission.
