About
Overview
This project is funded by Rockville's Art in Public Places program and integrates public art into Rockville's bikeway trail system. One public artist or group of public artists will be contracted to design, fabricate, and install one sign for each of five bike fix-it stations, including the post and footer at each location. The artist will research neighborhoods and areas where the signs are located to create distinct, themed designs.
Project Vision & Parameters
Signs should visually communicate to cyclists and trail users that they have arrived at a bike fix-it station in an artful and engaging way. Each sign should incorporate visual depictions of a historical or unique aspect of the neighborhood or area where it is located, and may include directions to other neighborhoods or trails in the network. Each sign can be different and distinct while fitting into an overall theme. Signs may include text and images and must comply with city code's Zoning Ordinance.
Design Requirements
Signs should be scaled appropriately for the fix-it stations. High-quality steel is preferred for fabrication; high-quality aluminum may be considered. Incorporating color is encouraged, and Tnemec paint is preferred for finishing. The artist will be required to guarantee the quality of work for two years after installation; signs are expected to last ten to fifteen years with reasonable maintenance.
Budget & Timeline
The all-inclusive project budget is $50,000, which must cover the artist's fee, stamped engineering drawings, materials, fabrication, delivery, installation, and other applicable costs. Target timeline for installation is calendar year 2027 or 2028.
Eligibility
Applicants must be public artists residing in Maryland, Northern Virginia, or Washington, DC. One application per artist or artist group allowed.

Selection Process
The Art Selection Committee reviews proposals and identifies up to two finalists and may select one alternate. Finalists receive a $750 honorarium to develop and present a site-specific proposal after receiving detailed project information, community engagement responses, and opportunity to meet stakeholders and visit the stations. The Committee presents recommendations to the Cultural Arts Commission's Public Art Committee, which forwards to the Cultural Arts Commission, and finally to the City of Rockville Mayor and Council for final award.
