About
Program Overview
Located on the sixth floor of MAD, the Artist Studios program supports NYC-based artists and designers working in craft and design. Two artists are selected per six-month session (August–February or February–August) to work on-site, with studio visits open to the public 2–3 days each week. Established in 2008, the program has served over 200 artists and is recognized as an innovative model for museum education.

Eligibility
Applicants must be an artist or designer with an active studio practice in applied arts, a resident of the NYC metro area, at least 21 years old, and a U.S. citizen or legal resident with a valid SSN or EIN. The program prioritizes artists from historically underrepresented communities and those whose practices engage historic studio craft materials or explore new technologies.

Facilities & Equipment
Private and shared studios available with specialized equipment including electric wheels, electric kilns, printers, floor looms, well-ventilated spray room, and woodworking tools. ADA-compliant accessibility. No housing provided.
Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by a committee of Museum staff and professionals in art, craft, and design. Applicants should demonstrate a mature body of work with technical skill and conceptual framework, outline a clear research direction for the residency, and show genuine readiness to engage with visitors. Selected finalists interview with the Deputy Director of Education and Manager of Public Programs; references are contacted, and all selected artists must complete a background check.
