About
Program Overview
Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) invites international creators in visual art, film, design, and architecture to participate in a residency program in Tokyo. Creators will stay, engage in creative work, and conduct research activities, with financial support to develop and present new works and ideas.
Eligibility
- Resides outside of Japan
- Has 5 years or more of experience in own area of expertise
- Has sufficient ability to communicate in English with other creators and TOKAS staff
- Independent and capable of working and living on own
- Duos with at least one creator residing outside Japan are eligible
- Students ineligible (except Ph.D. candidates)
Residency Dates & Duration
- Period 1: September 1 – November 30, 2021
- Period 2: January 1 – March 31, 2022
- Number of creators: 4 in total (2 for each period)
- Duos are eligible; living expenses and project fee for one person; airfare for both
Accommodation & Workspace
Private accommodation with private bathroom and kitchen is provided. A twin-bedded room will be provided to creators applying as a duo. Workspace is a shared studio.
Support & Fees
- Round-trip economy-class airfare between nearest airport and Tokyo (Narita or Haneda)
- Living expenses: JPY 3,500 per day (consumption tax excluded)
- Project fee: JPY 300,000 (consumption tax excluded)
- Income tax will be deducted from above amounts
Expectations
Creators are expected to participate in the Open Studio and/or Result Presentation (exhibition) to show the outcomes of the residency.

Selection Process
- Review by external juries: mid-August 2020
- Successful applicants notified individually: by end of September 2020
- Final results announced on website: beginning of October 2020
