Bayard Rustin Residency 2026-2027 - Bronx Council On The Arts

Overview

The Bayard Rustin Residency at Penington Friends House (PFH) provides up to one year of room and board to a person demonstrating a strong project that addresses ending Systemic Racism and creating anti-racism and intersectional equality. The residency is envisioned as a ladder to empowerment for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Location & Dates

• Located at Penington Friends House on the Lower East Side of Manhattan
• Residency begins September 2026
• Up to one year in duration

Eligibility

Applicants must be Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) with a demonstrated need to live in Manhattan. Work can focus on activism in the arts, policy change, human rights, community organizing, or other areas of activism addressing racism and strengthening equality. The resident does not have to be Quaker but their work should align with Quaker tenets of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship.

Residency Requirements

The resident must be a full-time resident of PFH and an active participating member of the intentional community. This includes eating chef-prepared dinners with other residents and participating in shared light house chores (approximately 1.5 hours per week on average). Residents will meet regularly with the Residency Manager and will be expected to share their progress with the New York City community through presentations or workshops.
