Mount Allison University invites Wabanaki artists and Wabanaki-led teams to submit Expressions of Interest for a permanent public artwork for an ornamental doorway portico at the RP Bell Library Centre for Innovation and Learning. The artwork will be located at the Café Commons, a gathering space within the library, and will serve as a welcoming threshold reflecting Indigenous presence, knowledge, and relationship. The project aims to honour Wabanaki knowledge systems and artistic expression through a contemporary artwork grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems.

The university seeks artistic design services, with fabrication by others (though proposals including fabrication will be considered). The artwork must be suitable for permanent interior installation, reflect Wabanaki knowledge systems and artistic practices, demonstrate respect for Indigenous cultural protocols and intellectual sovereignty, and be designed for a minimum lifespan of 30 years. While stone etching has been identified as one possible method, artists are encouraged to propose approaches appropriate to their artistic practice. The university is open to a variety of materials, mediums, and approaches.

  • Wabanaki-led artist or team required
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Mount Allison University employees ineligible
  • Submission Deadline: October 7, 2026, 4:00pm AT
  • Artistic Concept Development: October 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027
  • Library Renovation: May 2027 to January 2030
  • Fabrication: Anticipated in 2029
  • Project Completion: 2030

The total project budget is $100,000 CAD (all-inclusive) and will cover all costs associated with the project, including artist fees, supplies or materials, travel, and applicable taxes. No fees will be paid for preparation of Expressions of Interest. Only the successful proponent will receive compensation.

Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by a selection committee including the project Indigenous Talking Circle and members of the project team. Selection will be based on artistic excellence, demonstrated experience working with Indigenous knowledge systems and community-based projects, ability to realize a permanent public artwork, and alignment with the goals of the project.

Expressions of Interest must include a résumé or curriculum vitae and an expression of interest outlining art practice and approach to the project.
