2027 Michigan Central Art x Newlab Creative Residency

Applications open September 21 for the 2027 Michigan Central Art x Newlab Creative Residency. Artists, designers, researchers, and makers are invited to apply for a 12-week, research-based residency in Detroit exploring the intersections of art, technology, health, and society. Selected fellows will receive a $30,000 unrestricted award , along with access to Newlab Detroit’s 18,000-square-foot fabrication lab, project-aligned research opportunities, mentorship, and a cross-sector community of artists, innovators, researchers, and civic leaders. Applicants may apply to one of the two fellowship tracks: Track One: Art & Tech is in partnership with Newlab and funded by the Knight Foundation. Fellows-in-residence are often at the edge of technology, data visualization, wearable tech, accessibility, and sustainability. Past Fellows-in-Residence include Simon Anton, Ash Arder, Leith Campbell, Michael Candy, Cyrah Dardas, Maro Kariya, Osman Khan, Nicolás Kisic-Aguirre, Ananda Ray, Salam Rida, Wes Taylor, and Kristina Sheufelt. Track Two: Art & Health is in partnership with Newlab and Henry Ford Health. Artists embedded across wellness, care, and health tech are encouraged to apply to scale and embed their work across the art and health ecosystem in Detroit and beyond. Past Fellows include Sabrina Nelson and Chloe Pascal Crawford. The residency will take place in two sessions in 2027: Session One is February 8–April 30 and Session Two is May 17–August 6.
