Delivered by the Royal Drawing School, Glasgow School of Art and Dumfries House, alongside the Royal Drawing School’s international partners, the residency supports the development of new work inspired by the estate’s historic collections, architecture, gardens and landscape. The residency is generously supported by Thomas and Jeannie Rutherfoord and The King’s Foundation.
The residency is open to alumni of The Drawing Year and Online Drawing Development Year, Scottish artists, and artists nominated by partner art schools in the United States. Scottish applicants must currently live and work in Scotland or have studied at a Scottish art school. The residency welcomes painters, illustrators, printmakers, textile and furniture designers, practice-based researchers, and artists who incorporate drawing into their practice. Printmaking residencies are open only to artists proficient in printmaking.
Funded residencies provide a private studio and self-catering accommodation on the estate. Artists can work from observation, explore historic collections and develop new work. Four light-filled studios offer 24-hour access, with dedicated etching facilities for printmaking residents.
