The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 10-month, full-time graduate program at Maine College of Art & Design designed to transform practicing artists into certified art educators. For seven years running, 100% of MAT candidates have had a job placement within three months of graduation.

The program is structured in three phases: a 4-week summer intensive with theory-based courses and field experiences; 15 weeks in the fall covering studio art, teaching methods, and curriculum building; and 15 weeks in spring culminating in student teaching and a professional practices seminar.

Candidates develop fundamental teaching and learning principles, apply skills in varied settings (K-12, museums, community-based programs), cultivate self-awareness as artist-educators, integrate visual art across the curriculum, engage in collaborative inquiry, foster inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments, invent adaptive teaching strategies, and adhere to professional ethical standards.

Applications are reviewed starting in December. Complete applications submitted before the Priority Application Deadline receive preference. After this deadline, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as space permits, with no guarantee of decision extensions.

The MAT program requires 36 credit hours and 700 hours of field experience to be completed over 10 months on a full-time basis only. The program is not available in part-time format due to intensive coursework and field experience requirements.

Cost is $735 per credit. With 36 credits required, the total program cost is $26,460. Students may work weekend jobs or part-time employment with certain restrictions.

The program prepares artists for K-12 classroom teaching, museum education, community art educator positions, and leadership roles. Every graduate who wanted to teach has landed a full-time teaching job within three months of graduation.
