About
Overview
Visual artist Inge Meijer has been selected as Artist in Residence at NIAS. During her fellowship, Meijer will conduct artistic research into the role of plants in art exhibitions up to the 1990s, and into the relationship between art and plants. The project explores how museums such as MoMA and the Stedelijk Museum once showed houseplants as part of their exhibitions, a practice that has since disappeared.
Residency Dates
- February to July 2023
Project Details
Meijer will expand her research to MoMA, where plants were on display in exhibition spaces from 1937 to 1997. She will work on a book and an interdisciplinary symposium during her residency. Her research builds on her 2019 publication 'The Plant Collection,' about plants in the Stedelijk Museum collection.
Research Focus
The project examines the relationship between art and plants, and the division between culture and nature. Key questions include: Do we experience a Rothko differently with a houseplant next to it? What value is attributed to houseplants compared to works of art?
About the Fellowship
The Artist-in-Residence fellowship is offered through NIAS and the KNAW's Society of Arts to talented artists from all artistic disciplines. It provides an opportunity to work on a project within an international and interdisciplinary academic setting and promotes interaction between the arts and sciences.
