Arts Initiative Tokyo – Japan - Mondriaan Fund

Overview

Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT) is a small-scale platform founded in 2001 offering international artists, curators, and art observers the opportunity to work as residents in Tokyo. The residency is primarily suited to conducting research and establishing contacts in the Tokyo art world, with residents living and working in a renovated traditional Japanese warehouse (approximately 45 m² private one-bedroom studio in the Yukigaya district, about 30 minutes from the city centre).

Who Can Apply

Visual artists, curators, and art observers. Duo applications are not possible.

Work Period

• 1 February 2027 – 29 April 2027 (3 months)

Subsidy & Costs

The Mondriaan Fund provides €8,061 for artists or €7,544 for curators/art observers to help cover travel expenses, material costs, and living costs. A 10% personal contribution is required. The cost of studio rental and AIT support are covered separately by the Mondriaan Fund directly with AIT. Higher travel costs for residents based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom may be considered per situation.

Expectations

In addition to conducting their own research, residents are expected to participate in AIT activities, such as holding presentations about their work, participating in debates, or contributing to the blog.

• Application deadline: 26 February 2026, before 16:00 (Dutch time zone) / 11:00 (Caribbean time zone)
• Residency period: 1 February 2027 – 29 April 2027

Selection Process

Selection is made by an advisory committee that proposes candidates to the AIT, which makes the final decision. An interview may be part of the selection process. Processing time may exceed three months.
