Get matched →The Balaton Art Residency (BAR) invites contemporary artists to work for almost two weeks in Szólád, Hungary. The program emphasizes strengthening artistic cooperation among the Visegrád Group Countries and Asia, though artists from all over the world are welcome. The residency offers full cost coverage for selected artists.
The BAR has evolved into an international art residency since 2022, providing a high-quality professional environment and a relaxed atmosphere for artists to realize their ideas. The program was part of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture Programme, which helped in its international expansion. An independent professional jury selects participants each year, and the creative work is supported by an established contemporary Art Mentor.
The residency takes place in Szólád, a village with over 500 residents, located 5 km from the south coast of Lake Balaton. This idyllic setting is presented as an ideal environment for creative expression.
Klára Petra Szabó, a conceptual painter and intermedial artist born in 1981, will serve as the Art Mentor for 2024. Her work includes watercolor paintings, animated videos, and installations, exhibited both in Hungary and internationally.
The 2024 theme, “Glitch in the System – the role of mistakes and coincidence in the artistic process,” explores how systemic glitches and random coincidences can impact art. It questions how these elements can be embraced as tools to enhance creativity and generate new ideas, rather than being seen as failures.
During the residency, artists are offered Art Mentor support, professional talks and lectures with fellow artists, entertainment, campfires, open workshops, and a joint exhibition at the end of the two weeks.
