Curated by Tamara Toledo, the exhibition challenges conventional understandings of Latin American heritage by centering erased and overlooked histories.
Hugo Bernilla is a Peruvian-born Toronto-based interdisciplinary artist, educator and researcher with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design from OCAD University. Maria Luisa de Villa was born and raised in Mexico City and has been living in Canada since 1961. With over 50 years in the arts, she holds a BFA from York University and an MFA from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, and her work is held in collections including the National Gallery of Canada and Art Gallery of Ontario.
Tamara Toledo, Ph.D. is a Toronto-based art historian, curator, writer, and artist. She is co-founder of LACAP (Latin American Canadian Art Projects) and conceived the Latin American Speakers Series and ARCHIVO (a digital archive of Latin American, Latin-Caribbean, Latinx and Indigenous artists). She is currently the Director/Curator of Sur Gallery, Canada's only art space dedicated to contemporary Latin American and Latinx art.
