Overview
The River Bends & So Must We is a Kolaj Institute program for self-motivated artists at any career stage who want to develop their practice in community with others. The program includes two virtual sessions before convening in person at Kolaj Institute Gallery in New Orleans.

Eligibility
Open to self-motivated artists at any stage in their career, age 21 and over, from anywhere in the world.
Program Content
- Interactive sessions, collections research, presentations, and site visits
- Walks and collaborative collage making
- Exploration of historical Mississippi River materials
- Help build a research archive
- Critical and curatorial feedback on work presented
- Discussion of appropriation, copyright, fair use, and material choices in art making
Cost & Financial Aid
The Artist Lab costs $750 USD per artist. A limited number of grants is available to offset the Lab fee. Financial aid is not available for travel, accommodations, or meals.
After the Lab
Work made during the Artist Lab will be included in the "Place as Archive" exhibition at Kolaj Institute Gallery in October 2026. Artists will become members of Kolaj Institute's Place as Archive Project and will be invited to submit 3–5 collages and a statement for consideration for future exhibitions and a project book.
