This research project by Artquest aims to help artists, policymakers, and employers understand how artists work and develop equitable processes. The project takes seriously the idea that artists have business models, despite common misconceptions, and seeks to create template business models that allow artists to recognize themselves, think critically about their careers, and feel empowered to make business and creative decisions.

Artists are often invisible to policymakers due to lack of actionable data and legal misalignment of their activity. They are not well understood by finance, miss out on income-generating opportunities by conflating 'funding' with 'income', are reticent to think of their work as business, and are often unaware of their freelance employment rights. Applied artist workforce data shows 68% of artists report lack of income from their art career as a major barrier, and 53% report lack of time due to needing other jobs.

The project will create and review broad-brush business models based on artist experiences and applied data, refine these through interviews with individual artists at different career stages and in different artforms, further refine through small online group discussions with arts professionals, and survey artists including UK and international members of Artquest Exchange.

The project aims to create template business models for artists, demystify practice for funders and policymakers, help artists understand how different areas of their work interact and support each other, provide value to higher education as a basis for new curricula, and empower artists to understand themselves as workers with legal rights. Final results will include business models and a developed business models canvas for artists with guidance on use.
