Named after Californian portrait painter Don Bachardy, the fellowship supports drawing as a foundation for artistic practice.
The Fellow receives a $7,500 stipend towards travel and accommodation and spends three days a week for ten weeks drawing alongside students on The Drawing Year postgraduate programme and Public Programme courses. They can curate a programme from over 60 drawing courses, taught by practising artists, and attend lectures featuring leading contemporary artists and art historians.
The RA Schools offers a full-time, three-year programme for 10–17 postgraduate students each year. The programme is fee-free and includes tuition, studio space, and workshop access. It emphasizes a high staff-to-student ratio and a supportive community of artists. Students can explore their practice within the Royal Academy, utilizing its Archive, Collection, Library, and exhibitions.
