Overview
Self-directed residency for artists, writers, performers, musicians, puppeteers, theorists, and other creative practitioners. Focus on process, cultural heritage, craft, ecology, theoretical rigor, and space for experimentation in Athens' thriving contemporary art scene.
Duration & Schedule
Residency runs all year except August and December. Minimum stay is 2 weeks, maximum 3 months; most residents stay 1-2 months to participate in the monthly program. Monthly events include shared dinners, contemporary art tours, cultural history day trips, and open studios showcases. All activities are optional.
Accommodation
Large private and shared rooms in a 1928 neoclassical building in Kypseli neighborhood. Two apartments with two bathrooms, two kitchens, sumptuous living room, several balconies, and rooftop terrace. Located in Plateia Agiou Georgiou, a 20-minute walk from studios through Pedion Tou Areos park.
Studio & Workspace
Large shared studios on the 4th floor of a brutalist building in Exarcheia with huge windows and views of Lycabbetus Hill. Studios furnished with table, chair, shelves, and lamp. Shared common areas include cozy living room, kitchen, and woodshop with tools and materials. Access to AV equipment including televisions, microphone, and amplifier.
Disciplines & Media Supported
Anyone aged 18-118 with a creative project can apply: visual artists, writers, thinkers, academics, performers, dancers, architects, directors, and more. The space supports sculpture, painting, drawing, new media, digital photography, animation, architecture, performance, dance, theater, writing, composing, music, textile art, and more.
Materials & Support
Simple studio set-ups provided with tables, easels, lamps, and storage. Access to woodshop with tools and safety gear, and one-on-one assistance. Artists must provide their own art supplies; six art supply shops are within a short walk. AV equipment available including televisions, microphone, and amplifier. Performance and dance rehearsal space can be arranged upon request.
Community & Engagement
Monthly open studios, gallery tours, and nice dinners with fellow residents. Performances, workshops, and local engagement encouraged. Access to rotating series of cultural events in the Argo Annex project space including artist talks, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, and performances.
Location
Located in Exarcheia, Athens—a thriving contemporary art scene with galleries, cinemas, farmers' market, cafes, live music venues, and project spaces. Building overlooks a bustling circular square full of bars, cafes, restaurants, and an impressive cathedral.
