Tembe Art Studio – Moengo, Suriname - Mondriaan Fund

Overview

The Tembe Art Studio, founded by Surinamese artist Marcel Pinas in a former Suralco hospital in Moengo, offers artist-in-residence programmes where residents develop work, engage with the local community, and create spatial artworks for the Marowijne Art Park. The studio aims to support local talent development and cultural exchange between international and Surinamese artists.

Work Periods

• 1 February 2027 – 30 April 2027
• 1 April 2027 – 30 June 2027
• Overlapping month allows residents from both periods to work together
• 1 artist or duo per period

For Whom

The residency is for visual artists. Artists applying as duos or collaborations must submit individual applications and live/work together in one space during the residency.

What You Will Do

• Organise at least two workshops per week: one at the Tembe Art Studio and one in a local village
• Create a concrete artwork to be positioned in public space (for the sculpture garden)
• Engage with the local community, including children aged 10-20
• Work with local techniques and materials where possible
• Connect with Marcel Pinas's network of local and international artists

Subsidy

The Mondriaan Fund provides €9,222 to cover travel expenses, material costs, and living costs (for 1 person). A 10% personal contribution is required from the selected resident.
