Jazz Road Creative Residencies

Program Overview

Jazz Road Creative Residencies provides financial support for professional jazz artists from across the U.S. in self-defined residency activities that advance their artistry, creative exploration, community engagement, and lifework in jazz. The program is designed to remove financial barriers and provide time and resources for artists to invest deeply in their creative practice.

Award Amounts

• $5,000 to $40,000
• Grants awarded directly to artists

Eligibility

• Individual professional jazz artists (working solo or with a professional composer-led/collective jazz ensemble)
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident based in the U.S. or territories
• Noteworthy record of work experience and accomplishments in the jazz field
• Mid-career to more accomplished career level
• Previous Creative Residency awardees are NOT eligible to apply (though previous/current Jazz Road Tours awardees are eligible)

Residency Requirements

Residencies must be 1-4 weeks in duration (continuous or non-continuous) and can take place anywhere in the U.S. Artists define their own residency goals, structure, budget, location(s), and timeline. Residencies should represent a departure from the applicant's previous artistic norms.

Residency Focus Areas

• Creative emphasis: develop, produce, record and/or perform existing and/or new work
• Community engagement emphasis: connect artistic vision to community immersion opportunities
• Pushing the Jazz field forward
• Most competitive grants address two of the above three areas

Collaboration Options

• Individual artists working independently
• Lead artist working independently with an ensemble
• Collaborating artists included to develop single, inter-, or multi-disciplinary work
• Artists collaborating with partner organizations (financial or non-financial)
